Pregnancy Sex: Is it safe?

Many couples are concerned about having sex during pregnancy. In a normal pregnancy, having sexual intercourse is completely fine. A “normal pregnancy” is a pregnancy without complications. Consult with your physician to determine whether or not your pregnancy is considered normal.

In a typical pregnancy, the fetus is located inside the amniotic sac and uterus. The uterus is sealed off by a mucous plug at the lower end of the cervix. This leaves the baby very well protected.

Some also worry that the baby might know that his or her parents are having intercourse. The truth is the baby has no idea what is happening during sex. He or she cannot see what you are doing and will have no memory of it.

It is rare that intercourse is prohibited during an entire pregnancy. Your doctor may restrict intercourse for any of the following reasons:

  • If unexplained bleeding occurs
  • During the first trimester if the woman has a history of miscarriage
  • If the amniotic membranes have ruptured
  • During the last 8-12 weeks if a woman has a history of pre-term labor
  • If placenta previa is known to exist
  • In the last trimester if twins are being carried

Relax and enjoy the journey. Also remember that it is best to refer to your practitioner regarding any questions or concerns that you have throughout your pregnancy.
